Belarus Considers Launching Cryptocurrency Mining

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has suggested that the country might consider mining digital assets.

"Take a look at mining. More and more people are approaching me about it. If it’s profitable for us, why not do it? We have an excess of electricity. Let them produce this cryptocurrency and so on," Lukashenko said to Alexey Kushnarenko, the newly appointed Minister of Energy of Belarus, as reported by the local publication Belta.

This statement comes amid reports that the US government is exploring the possibility of creating a national strategic cryptocurrency reserve, which could include assets such as Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Solana (SOL), Ripple (XRP), and Cardano (ADA).

Lukashenko acknowledged the growing interest of the White House in digital assets, stating, "You see where the world is heading, especially the largest economy. Yesterday, they announced plans to support a crypto reserve."

"There will be demand for this. Maybe we should get involved ourselves," Lukashenko added.

Belarus would not be the first country to mine digital assets. The Kingdom of Bhutan, with its abundance of hydropower, already has over 100 megawatts (MW) of operational Bitcoin mining infrastructure and plans to add another 500 MW to the grid. According to Arkham Intelligence, the country currently holds $950 million in Bitcoin. El Salvador, in turn, uses geothermal energy for Bitcoin mining, albeit on a smaller scale.
