France Launches Bitcoin Mining to Utilize Surplus Energy

On July 11, a bill was introduced in the French National Assembly proposing a five-year pilot program to direct surplus electricity—mainly from nuclear and renewable sources—into Bitcoin mining operations.

The primary objective is to reduce energy waste and increase generation profitability by creating additional revenue streams through cryptocurrency mining. The pilot aims to utilize electricity efficiently during low-demand periods when conventional markets are unable to absorb it.

The project also plans to repurpose heat generated by mining rigs for heating industrial and residential facilities, as well as agricultural applications, thereby improving overall energy efficiency.

Data centers will be strategically located near power plants or on abandoned industrial sites to minimize logistical and infrastructural expenses.

This initiative reflects France’s commitment to integrating digital technologies into its national energy framework and supports the development of a sustainable economy.
