Twitter co-founder donates $21 million to nonprofit OpenSats for Bitcoin development

Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey donated $21 million to the nonprofit OpenSats, showing significant support for the future of Bitcoin and decentralized social networks.

According to OpenSats, this investment, as part of Dorsey's #startsmall campaign, will advance all areas of development and operations. The general fund receives $15 million, the Fondation Nostra receives $5 million, and operating budgets receive $1 million of the $21 million total.

Both current and future projects will benefit

The Bitcoin ecosystem and the broader technology movement promoting freedom will benefit from these funds for both current and future projects. Nostr's popularity skyrocketed after accepting payments in Bitcoin from programmers. It now has 16 million users, with half a million of them using it every day.

New committee and board members were appointed by OpenSats at the same time as @Fiatjaf contributed and another Nostr user named NVK will be on the panel that will evaluate upcoming initiatives. In addition, NVK and another user named Gigi were elected to the group's board of directors.

The main goal of these plans is to make it easier for people to use free and open source software without compromising their rights and freedoms. To prevent the rise of “digital totalitarianism,” as OpenSats describes it, such infrastructure is critical.

In line with its core goal of expanding the Bitcoin ecosystem and other open source initiatives, OpenSats has a history of supporting a variety of ideas. The group has previously funded 21 teams such as BTCPay Server, a self-service payment system, and the Bitcoin Policy Institute.
